Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Re: message

Thanks for the message! Regarding adding external links, I added 2 links to interviews of editors of the magazines the wikipedia pages were about, and a 'best of' list relating to the style of music another page was about. All the linked articles are primarily informative and open to all. Were both these types of links outside the guidelines for Wikipedia, or just some of them? Thanks for clarifying; I'd like to add more from time to time if this is allowed and useful. I have now registered as MattJazz1986 176.175.137.200 (talk) 14:19, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Fouad Makki source and Habesha peoples

Hello, I think you made a mistake because the sources uses an alternate spelling. The Makki source uses the spelling "Abesha" rather than "Habesha". And the Zemene Mesafint is analogous with the Middle Ages Llakew18 (talk) 23:53, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Left response at User talk:Llakew18#April 2020. -- Gyrofrog 00:10, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, my bad, I completely mixed up the Makki source. I was trying to cite another source about Habesha identity among Ethio-Eritrean Canadians and Americans, I was trying to cite a different source and I couldn’t revert the page because there were edits by others made between these so I copied and pasted sections from a previous version of the article so I won’t have to retype the the in-line citations and the brackets. Instead, I made the mistake of reintroducing the controversial sources by accident. I’m just now realizing this after I looked into the source for the key terms, so I can show you. Llakew18 (talk) 20:06, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

How Am I A SocPuppet ?

I literally see multiple re-occurring editors that state similar points with each other all over pages that I have edited. I even sometimes click on the contributions link and put in the editors' user names or IP addresses to look for other similar pages that the editors have edited that I am interested in to edit. I do this all the time looking for things I want to edit. Along the way, I see multiple re-occurring editors that each time, I notice the same admins, the same admins I even recognize you User talk:Gyrofrog a lot over here to as well. When I see a sentence made by another editor that sounds weird, I rearrange or paraphrase it so it can sound better, that might also be why you think that I might have been a Sockpuppet. I like to edit certain topics that I know about and I click on the previous contributions of other editors to find other pages that are interesting to edit, so can you just remove this SocPuppet accusation, and can I just get back to editing without this looming over my head? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Wherehouse Entertainment, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Viacom (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi Gyrofrog, just letting you know that I've modified your block of 192.252.213.194 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)) with a more specific template and to give it an expiry date as sometimes this can change over time. Bsharri meaning 'Bet-Ishtar'

Hello,

You have removed my edit for not having a source whilst there is no source listed for the word Bsharri meaning Bet-Shreer. It's well known that Bsharri originally means Bet-Ishtar and many Bsharri residents would attest to this. I will leave a source this time for your convenience.

Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.21.14.77 (talk) 21:59, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Bsharri

Hello,

Why do you keep saying that Bsharri means the House of Truth? I speak Aramaic and 'Shreer' isn't even a word. Furthermore, you are not even citing a source for Bsharri meaning 'Beth-Shreer'; the phrase itself makes absolutely no sense. Therefore I will have to keep editing... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.21.14.77 (talk) 12:16, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Technical question

User:TheLionHasSeen has IMO correctly identified a new sock of Hoaeter, but has only added them in an old report awaiting closure. Will clerks/CUs actually notice this, or do we need a new report in the SPI? –Austronesier (talk) 12:48, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

DLP designation

Hello and thank you regarding the discretion on the Mama Lola entry. As far as I know, there are no formal news accounts about Mrs. Champagne Lovinski's death on May 23, 2020. The information has circulated widely on social media, including public posts. It is my personal opinion not to publicize her death through the Wikipedia entry until her family has set up either a formal webpage or has endorsed a published obituary for her. There have been previous attempts from unrelated spiritual practitioners to claim affiliation with her on their websites and make money. Thanks again from a friend of the family who does not speak for the family.

Hi Gyrofrog! have you already seen this one: Template:Ethiopian-Eritrean Cultural and Historical Community? This seems to be another desparate attempt to turn "Habesha = Ethiopian + Eritrean" into a thing. –Austronesier (talk) 10:07, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello from PiL Roadie

I've got a few edits I could make to your PiL pages as I was in the studios during nearly all the recording for the first two albums. Just to kick off, I took the word 'session' out from description of David Humphrey. David was the drummer in my band which is how he got into PiL, he was eighteen at the time.

Another thing is you mention Rollerball which was the rehearsal studio my outfit - CB Ents - ran and I am certain it was never used for recording 'Graveyard', it couldn't have been for all kinds of reasons, I think that was Advision too. Anyway glad you made the page! Thelisteninghand (talk) 19:35, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
